Marty Schnider’s family has deep roots in the Washington, D.C. area real estate and development market—since the 1930s they are responsible for developing thousands of mixed-use and custom properties and, most recently, millions of square feet in prime mixed-use development throughout Arlington.
Martin L. Schnider, Jr. is a founding principal of Smith | Schnider and Liberty Properties.
Marty manages the day-to-day affairs of his family real estate company, Fred Schnider Investment Group, LLC, founded by his grandfather Fred Schnider in the 1930s. Fred Schnider (1898-1986), a native Washingtonian and real estate developer throughout Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia, developed and built thousands of apartment units and several office buildings, as well as hundreds of acres of commercial and residential land. Marty’s experience with the family company goes back to his high school days when he would spend weekends and summers performing chores on rural farmland in Chantilly, VA, which he would later go on to help develop into valuable industrial property.
During his college years at Georgetown University, Marty gained experience developing single-family and townhouse lots throughout northern Virginia and managing commercial office buildings. He worked in the land sales department of an established real estate company after graduation, and also built and renovated single-family homes in Montgomery County.
After graduating from Georgetown Law School in 1995, Marty became a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and worked for several years in complex commercial transactions with renowned real estate law firms. He later teamed up with the Shooshan Company and Clark Enterprises in the late 1990s to develop the Liberty Center development in Arlington, VA.
The Schniders are proud of their long relationship Clark Enterprises that stretches back to the early career of its founder A. James Clark. In more recent years, the Fred Schnider Investment Group and the Shooshan Company have collaborated on more than two million square feet of mixed-use development throughout Arlington, and have an ongoing pipeline of hundreds of thousands of square feet of current and future development.
It was during his experience in condominium development that Marty met Ron Smith and Julie Zelaska with whom he founded Smith|Schnider. Ron and Julie successfully programmed the Liberty Center Condominium and Liberty Tower Apartments in Ballston, VA, and established the sales and marketing strategy for the property that met all development milestones and financial expectations despite completion in January 2008, in the midst of an historic real estate correction. The Liberty Center has since won several industry awards and is one of the most highly regarded properties of its kind in the region.
Marty lives in Bethesda, MD with his wife Isabelle, whom he has known since junior high school. They have been married for thirty years and have eight children and one grandson. Marty and Isabelle enjoy spending time with their children, traveling and spending time together at their home in South Bethany Beach, DE.
